Had I had this, and therewith no doubt H.E. the Governor's consent, I could by now have told the Texas Company that, if a settlement with the firm of reise proved impossible (even after their Mr. Douglass' negotations with them on the spot), there was the firm of Dodwells to step into the breach. Thus that Company's fatal wish to establish its own organization in Hongkong and Canton would never have taken root, as all the Texas people want, and have a right to expect under my Company's contract with them, is that we provide a firm to do the China part of their business.
